Pallet Rack Layout & Installation

Pallet rack layout & installation considerations should be well defined in the quotation provided manufacturer’s representative.  This statement may seem simplistic, however we have seen many potential clients who think “Here is my warehouse, the square footage give me a quotation for the pallet rack, a blueprint showing the maximum storage layout and also include installation time-line.”  Then they go with the lowest price. That way of requesting bids is a huge mistake.

Pallet Rack Layout & Installation Guidelines

Permits – Most cities, counties and other government entities require a permit  for a pallet rack installation. The permit process is usually handled through the contractor.

Pallet Rack Installer Certifications – Whether new or used racking is being installed, stick with major pallet racking vendors who are certified by the Rack Manufacturer’s Institute, Inc. (RMI) and the Material Handling Institute of America (MHIA). Insure references to both organizations are included in the proposal or quotation. Ensure the installers are certified as trained by the manufacturer.

Floor Loading – Another obvious area to study although many times it is overlooked. Ensure the foundation or sub floor exceeds the floor loading guidelines as defined by the racking manufacturer. Pay special attention to the warehouse storage layout in pre-existing buildings, especially if they are over 50 years old. Many of that era did not necessarily comply with code, if there was one.

Effective Use Space – Ensure the layout allows for maximum storage capacity, even if the entire configuration is not utilized when first installed.

Material Handling Workflow – Ensure access paths between pallets are wide enough for storage of a mixed use material handling.

Specialize Access Material Handling Equipment – Consider standard pallet rack layout otherwise you may be in for a surprise requirement to purchase specialized material handling equipment other thank standard pallet trucks and forklifts.

Seismic Design Specifications - Your contractor should be aware of any seismic considerations and additional layout and installation requirements.
